Loch Ness and the Highlands from Edinburgh
Loch Ness sits in the Great Glen, the fault line that cuts clean across Scotland from Fort William to Inverness. From Edinburgh it is around 160 miles to the southern end of the loch, and about three and a half hours if you drive straight there. This day does not drive straight there. The road west through Loch Lomond, Rannoch Moor and Glencoe adds an hour and turns the journey into the reason for going.
The loch itself runs twenty-three miles north-east towards Inverness and is never much more than a mile and a half wide, with the A82 following its shore the whole way. Fort Augustus holds the southern end, where a staircase of five locks lifts the Caledonian Canal up out of the loch and through the middle of the village.

How far is Loch Ness from Edinburgh?

How far are the Highlands from Edinburgh?

Can you take the train from Edinburgh to Loch Ness?
